Qld: Calendar reflects strength and pride of Cape York women

TOWNSVILLE, Qld, Feb 10 AAP - The young Aboriginal women of Cape York are strong, confident,beautiful and proud of their heritage.
That is the message the remote community of Aurukun hopes to convey to the rest ofthe country in a new calendar featuring photos of 22 young residents.
The photos are not sexy or glamorous, but are meant to reflect confidence, traditionalculture and their achievements.
Organiser Cindy Hales said the calendar, to be launched in Cairns, is intended to tellall women they can make choices about their future and education.
"(It shows) that being strong and positive and confident in yourself, you can achievethe goals you set yourself in life," she said.
"And it shows strength in their traditional culture as well as taking advantage ofcontemporary opportunities, which can be difficult in a remote community."
One of the volunteer models, Lexcine Yunkaporta, 15, was photographed holding a fightingstick in front of a towering anthill.
She chose the pose herself.
"We are the women to pass the message on," she said.
A childcare worker chose to be photographed with the tools of her trade - mini trucksand building blocks - at a traditional site.
Nearly 1,300 copies have already been sold.

Proceeds will be used to provide more educational opportunities.
The calendar was produced by the Cape York Young Women's Project, which provides supportand opportunities for young women who want education and training.
