NSW: Police swoop pawn brokers in city and eastern suburbs
More than 140 detectives have today raided pawn shops and second hand dealers across
Sydney city and the eastern suburbs on the hunt for stolen goods.
Detectives swept through 18 pawn brokers and three second hand shops in the Sydney
CBD, Kings Cross, Maroubra and Double Bay.
City east regional commander, Assistant Commissioner DICK ADAMS says $250,000 worth
of suspected stolen property has been put on hold to trace back to its owners.
Watches, jewellery, audio equipment and electrical appliances topped the detectives'
shopping list.
Mr ADAMS has told radio 2UE that 10 men have been arrested for various offences, including
one man found with a commercial quantity of Indian hemp.
City east crime manager, Superintendent JOHN HARTLEY says the massive raid had only
been possible with the pumped up numbers in the ranks due to the Olympics.
Superintendent HARTLEY says some pawn shops are doing the right thing by keeping good
records while others are lax.
