FED:Timeline of events so far in Pulver case
Timeline of events in the Madeleine Pulver bomb hoax case:
August 3, Wednesday:
* Sometime before 2.30pm (AEST) a balaclava-clad male breaks into the Mosman family
home of Madeleine Pulver and corners the 18-year-old schoolgirl.
* About 2.30pm police are called and told an intruder has chained a bomb around Madeleine's
neck before fleeing.
* Police send local officers Constable Karen Lowden and a probationary constable to
the Pulver home in Burrawong Avenue.
* Police lock down the area, barricading side streets and evacuating neighbours living
adjacent to the Pulver home.
* Officer Lowden begins her own three-hour ordeal, keeping Madeleine company and chatting
with her about her HSC trials. Both believe the device is a bomb.
* Scores of emergency personnel including the Bomb Squad technicians, police negotiators,
firefighters and paramedics arrive.
* Around 4pm media converge on the area and report live throughout the night and into
the next day.
* Bomb Squad technicians moves into the house around 5.30pm and try to determine the
contents of the suspected bomb. Officer Lowden leaves the home.
August 4, Thursday:
* About 12.30am, the Bomb Squad safely removes the device from around Madeleine's neck
and paramedics take her to hospital where she is evaluated and released.
* Later police say the elaborate device did not contain explosives.
* Father Bill Pulver, with wife Belinda, thanks officers and personnel who helped his
daughter during her ordeal.
* Police strike force Haddon is set up to investigate.
August 8, Monday:
* Businessman Paul "Doug" Peters allegedly departs Sydney on a flight to the United States.
* Madeleine returns to Wenona School, where she is a student and prepares to sit HSC trial exams.
August 9-15:
* NSW Police request help from the US FBI to find and arrest Mr Peters.
August 16, Tuesday:
* About 6am (AEST) Sydney time, an FBI SWAT team arrests Mr Peters at the home of his
ex-wife in La Grange, 50km from Louisville, ahead of an expected court appearance the
following day.
* Mr Pulver hopes "this development marks the beginning of the end of this traumatic
ordeal for our family".

NSW:Zara fever hots up ahead of Sydney opening
By Isabel Hayes
SYDNEY, April 19 AAP - Some customers are expected to camp overnight to be first in
line at 9am when Spanish retailer Zara opens its first Australian store in Sydney's Westfield
Pitt Street Mall centre.
A sneak peek inside the Pitt St fashion store on Tuesday showed its trademark collection
of classic dresses, wool coats, jeans and knitwear, all at reasonable prices.
Zara has designed a collection specifically for Australia's southern hemisphere seasons,
which incorporates key looks now hitting the runway.
"The global trend is colour," Zara's chief communications officer Jesus Echevarria
told reporters in Sydney.
"(In Australia) this trend is adapted to the fabrics that are needed for the season
that we are now in."
As a result, bright colour dominates the store, with winter coats, boyfriend blazers,
shoes and knitwear lined up in blocks of red, blue, orange and yellow.
Jeans and cigarette pants are priced from $69, while trench coats start from $120 and
dresses hover around the $120 mark.
Australia is the 78th country to become home to the brand, owned by Inditex, which
first opened in Spain in 1975.
Today there are 1700 stores worldwide, which last year generated sales of more than
E8 billion ($A10.87 billion).
Shoppers swarmed outside the store on Tuesday, desperate to get a first look at the
collection, which includes men, women and children's clothing.
Kathleen Monares, 20, from Campbelltown and Maria Rafael, 19, from Rouse Hill told
AAP they were dying to go in and start shopping.
"We always buy it online but now we get to shop here, it's amazing," Ms Rafael said,
adding she was most excited about the store's collection of shearling jackets.
Diya Milan, 25, originally from the UK, said she had missed Zara since she moved to Australia.
There was a big gap in the market for affordable, fashionable clothing in Sydney, she said.
"The things that you get here are quite expensive when things that you get back home
are cheap or reasonable," Ms Milan said.
"When you have to spend more here - and in dollars too - it's feels like a big rip-off."
Those who miss the expected crush needn't worry as Zara operates an ordering system
based on customer trends.
Each store will make constant changes to the initial collection based on demand with
stock arriving within 36 and 48 hours of being ordered.
Zara in Sydney will be open from 9am to 9pm (AEST) on Wednesday.
A store in Melbourne is set to open later this year.

China Post to Suspend emsylw.com Next Month
BEIJING, Jan 21, 2011 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- China Post, a state-owned logistics service provider in the country, announced yesterday that it was scheduled to suspend the operation of emsylw.com, its online logistics service platform, on February 1, 2011 as part of a business integration.
The platform, coming into service in January 2010, is engaged in the one-stop services such as birthday gift delivery and business gift delivery, with the help of EMS, an express unit of China Post.
Such a suspension, pointed out some market observers, may result from a smaller user base of the platform. The China Post platform is dwarfed by its peers in flexibility, although it has bigger advantages in delivery network and settlement.
Latest statistics from the China e-Business Research Center show that China's online retail market transaction value touched CNY 513.1 billion in the entire 2010 and is possible to top CNY 1 trillion in the next two years.

Parliamentary secretary Bill Shorten, one of the Labor powerbrokers behind the dumping
of Kevin Rudd for Ms Gillard, said the leaks in the second and third weeks of the campaign
"sucked a lot of the oxygen" out of the campaign debate.
He also blamed coalition "attack ads" especially in Queensland, and to a lesser extent
in NSW, trying to associate federal Labor with the fortunes of unpopular state governments.
"States issues and the leaks made it very hard for us to do any better than we did,"
Mr Shorten told ABC Television.

Fed: IMF figures show "recession inevitable", Swan says=3
Mr Swan said governments of both persuasions had contributed to Australia's underlying
fiscal strength and policy framework that the IMF and OECD had ticked off on.
"I will give credit to Mr Howard, I will give credit to Mr Costello, I will give credit
to their predecessors who put in place a framework that has certainly put us in a stronger
position than many other countries," he said.
However, Mr Swan said one of Labor's tasks remained to repair damage caused by the
coalition government's failure to invest in infrastructure, skills and education.
He declined to say whether taxes would be raised in the May 12 budget.
"I don't speculate about what we are doing in the budget. The most important thing
that we will do in this budget is to continue to support jobs and employment and growth
by continuing stimulus," he said.
Mr Swan said under coalition proposals, the only way Australia could have avoided a
temporary deficit was by a savage cut in spending or a dramatic increase in taxes.
"That doesn't make sense in the middle of global recession," he said.

DiGi confident of 3G break-even in 5 years
Byline: Goh Thean Eu
Edition: Main/Lifestyle
Section: Business Times
Type: Company
MOBILE operator DiGi.Com Bhd said it can break even on its third- generation (3G) investments in five years, due to lower equipment costs and a bigger market share.
The company plans to invest up to RM800 million over the next three years on a 3G network alone.
Now, with the 3G spectrum, chief executive officer Morten Lundal believes that DiGi is a "complete" player as it levels the playing field.
"I would say that, with the spectrum, we feel that we are a bit more grown-up.
"We had a spectrum handicap against Maxis and Celcom, and that gap has been taken away," Lundal said in an interview.
With 3G, DiGi is now able to offer new services like video calls as well as broadband services - allowing mobile phone users to surf the Internet using their devices as well as providing Internet access to homes without a fixed line.
Lundal knows that penetrating the broadband market will not be easy as the market is crowded with many players, such as Maxis, Celcom, Telekom Malaysia Bhd's Streamyx, and not forgetting the four new WiMAX spectrum winners.
"Broadband market is a challenging market to compete in. It's crowded. Everyone is offering the same thing. It is very hard, and even impossible to differentiate," he said.
Nevertheless, the company said it will muscle its way through the competition and will compete in all areas in the broadband segment.
Lundal expects to boost DiGi's market share by "a few percentage points".
In 2004, the company had a revenue market share of 18.3 per cent and a subscriber market share of 22.2 per cent.
Today, its share of revenue has grown to more than 25 per cent while subscriber market share has risen to 28 per cent.
DiGi should also be able to boost its average revenue per user (ARPU) with 3G services. At present, it has the smallest postpaid ARPU in the industry.
Analysts believe that Maxis and Celcom are able to generate higher post-paid ARPU because they are able to offer additional services like 3G.
However, they also believe that it is only a matter of time before DiGi's post-paid ARPU catches up with its rivals.

Vic: Mullett slams bullying report
MELBOURNE, April 18 AAP - Police Association Victorian secretary Paul Mullett says
he will refuse to be interviewed by police over bullying allegations against him, after
a report recommended renewing investigations.
Senior Sergeant Mullett also lashed out at Victorian Ombudsman George Brouwer, who
tabled the report today.
Mr Brouwer's report has recommended WorkSafe and Victoria Police further investigate
the claims against Sen Sgt Mullett, because initial investigations were inadequate.
Sen Sgt Mullet said the report was "scandalous".
"It's vexatious, it's a total attack and erosion of the independence of a free and
independent trade union, being the police association," he said.
Flanked by union heavyweights and surrounded by about 30 supporters at Trades Hall
in Melbourne, Sen Sgt Mullett said the police force had no right to intervene in union
business.
Asked whether he would agree to be interviewed by police officers, Sen Sgt Mullett
said he would not.
"No. We may as well hand over the keys to the police association to the chief commissioner,"
he said.
Sen Sgt Mullett said he would seek legal advice on whether he would have to be interviewed
by WorkSafe investigators.
He denies he is a bully, saying he has only ever sought to stridently push the cause
of his 11,000 members.
He called on the state government to examine Mr Brouwer's double role as ombudsman
and director of the Office of Police Integrity (OPI).
"It's a two-ringed circus staring George Brouwer as the OPI and George Brouwer as the
ombudsman," he said.
"(There is a) direct conflict of interest where he doesn't criticise himself in this report."
Sen Sgt Mullett said the report was part of a campaign against him aimed at destabilising
the union during enterprise bargaining talks.
"It smacks of political opportunism," he said.
"This entire sad saga was commenced by a very small group of police association dissidents
who attempted to gain control of the police association.
"They lost and our strong advice to them is they should get on with their lives."
Victorian Trades Hall Council Secretary Brian Boyd said he also was concerned by the
ombudsman's report.
"We have a clear policy of asking for the employers not to interfere in the internal
affairs of a union, any union," he said.
"And one of the key recommendations of the ombudsman's report asks the Victoria Police
to again go inside the police association and interfere in their processes and it's not
acceptable."

SA: Govt to rid Adelaide of suppression city tag
ADELAIDE, April 4 AAP - The South Australian government wants to rid Adelaide of its
`suppression city' tag with plans to make it harder for judges to issue suppression orders
in court cases.
South Australia grants more suppression orders than anywhere else in Australia, Attorney
General Michael Atkinson said.
"The proposed changes to existing laws would open up the judicial system and help increase
public confidence in the court process," Mr Atkinson said.
"We want to make sure that these orders are used genuinely in the interests of justice,
to protect the privacy of victims and to prevent the accused escaping through mistrial.
"But what we don't want is for suppression orders to be used to protect the rights
of the accused ahead of the rights of victims."
Under the proposed changes public interest in the publication of court proceedings
and the rights of the news media to publish details of cases would be given greater weight.
Suppression orders would not be allowed unless refusal of the order would prejudice
the proper administration of justice or cause undue hardship.
Suppression orders would also be reviewed automatically at the end of court proceedings.
Mr Atkinson said the media might also be given online access to details of suppression orders.
He said the government had rejected suggestions from a parliamentary committee that
automatic suppression orders be applied to all court cases.

Handheld network analyzers; Essential tools for your network first-aid kit.
hen your network is sick, you become the network doctor. One tool in your "little black bag" of diagnostic tools should be a handheld network analyzer. These devices can reveal cable faults, detect chattering network adapters, identify switch malfunctions and determine the nature of a router malady. These are the problems that cause most network infrastructure failures. Having the right network testing tools can save hours or even days of network downtime.
When trouble strikes, you'll want to be ready to quickly diagnose the problem.
Protocol analyzer software on a notebook computer can be helpful when you're trying to diagnose a network problem, but a protocol analyzer can't tell you whether a cable contains a broken wire, some insulation has chafed from a cable or a sick network adapter is behaving strangely (You can brush up on your cable testing terms and concepts, go online to www.nwfusion.com, DocFinder: 1024).
Handheld network-testing device vendors have included several protocol-analysis functions inside what were formerly just cable-testing tools. The vendors say the tools can quickly spot problems ranging from cable faults to overutilization. To test these claims, we invited vendors to submit handheld devices to our lab for evaluation. We looked for fast, accurate determination of cabling and other network problems; some ability to transfer data into a PC for further analysis and reporting; ease of use; and a reasonable price. We particularly wanted a device to be able to diagnose problems on a live network, not just at cable installation time.
Agilent Technologies submitted FrameScope 350 Network Performance Analyzer kit, which includes FrameScope 350 and DualRemote 350. Psiber Data Systems shipped us its Pinger Network IP Test Tool. Fluke Corp. sent us three tools, NetTool Connectivity Tester, OptiView Network Analyzer and OneTouch Series II Network Assistant. Because Fluke recently acquired another handheld testing-tool vendor, Microtest, we let Fluke submit three products for this review. Ideal Industries declined to send its Lantek 7, saying the device is just for checking new cable installations.
In selecting a winner, we discovered that two of the five products were worthy of a World Class Award. Fluke's NetTool gets the official World Class nod because it accurately pinpointed cabling and network faults with aplomb, and without a fancy color display or extra bells and whistles.
Pricing differences
Fluke's NetTool ($900) offers a basic set of essential features for detecting problems such as cable faults, link configuration errors, odd network adapter behaviors, network health ailments and unresponsive servers. Although the NetTool's user interface and results display are simple and utilitarian, it has almost as many diagnostic features as Agilent's FrameScope 350 ($6,000) and the OneTouch Series II Network Assistant ($4,200) for a fraction of the price. Both the FrameScope 350 (2.6 pounds) and the OneTouch (1.7 pounds) are heavier touch-screen cable fault and network-diagnostic tools, while NetTool is a lightweight five-key LCD-screen unit. The Psiber Pinger ($350) is an 8.7-ounce, easy-to-carry, 19-key device that pings from one to eight IP addresses via Internet Control Messaging Protocol (ICMP) packets.
Fluke's OptiView Network Analyzer ($13,000), the heaviest device at 6.2 pounds, is the ultimate network-diagnostic tool. It's a full-blown touch-screen protocol analyzer outfitted with comprehensive cable-testing capabilities.
Physical features
The simple but utilitarian NetTool has four cursor buttons, a select button and a power button. Getting used to touching the buttons with just the right amount of pressure takes some practice. The screen is a simple eight-line monochrome LCD with rudimentary but easily recognizable icons for network devices and basic operations such as navigating the different screens. The user interface is practical, straightforward and surprisingly intuitive. The initial screen offers two choices: autotest and device configuration. Selecting autotest when the unit is attached to a cable with a wiremap plug at the other end invokes the NetTool's cable-testing functions. Choosing autotest when the unit is attached to a hub or switch displays network health, link configuration and other network-diagnostic test results. If you connect a network device to one of NetTool's two RJ-45 ports and connect the other RJ-45 port to that device's network cable, autotest collects and shows identifying information and traffic statistics for the network device.
The OneTouch sports a monochrome touch screen. Fluke doesn't supply a stylus with the OneTouch, but we didn't need one. Fingertips worked just as well on the well-spaced icons that Fluke designed. The display updates continuously, and touching a screen navigation icon, device icon, IP address or other on-screen element lets you quickly drill down to see more detail or to perform a specific operation.
The FrameScope has a beautiful, color LCD touch screen that is a dream to operate with or without the supplied stylus. The DualRemote 350 is a slave unit that needs no user interaction, but it has 16 LEDs that display cable-testing results such as attenuation errors, split pairs, NEXT errors, return loss errors and ELFEXT errors. The FrameScope's screens are not quite as intuitive as those of the OneTouch, but only a few moments are needed to get used to them each time the machine is powered on and to go searching for trouble on the network. Unfortunately, FrameScope doesn't use its list of discovered nodes to establish a default collection of network devices to test. You must manually add devices to a particular autotest suite.
Imagine a color notebook computer running Windows. Now take away the keyboard and give the computer a touch-screen display with a well-designed, easy-to-navigate icon-based user interface. Install protocol-analysis software on the computer and a network interface that can run cable fault diagnostics and measurements. Voila! You've created an OptiView Network Analyzer. OptiView's user interface will be instantly second nature to anyone familiar with Windows who can use a stylus to select on-screen icons, buttons and data elements. OptiView's user interface has an on-screen virtual keyboard, but you can optionally connect a standard PC keyboard to an OptiView.
The Pinger has 19 keys that resemble a telephone keypad with extra functions. Just like telephone keypad keys, twelve of the keys are for data entry of names and IP addresses. Four are cursor keys, and the remaining three are function keys for selecting on-screen menu items such as exit, save and setup. The four-line monochrome LCD screen is a bit wider than a typical cell phone's screen. Navigating the Pinger's few screens is a breeze.
All the units come with batteries and AC adapters, and, to conserve battery power, they all go to sleep or shut down after about 5 minutes of inattention.
Fluke's NetTool
The NetTool can run cable tests to determine problems such as cable length and whether a wire is broken. Attaching the supplied wiremap adapter to the far end of a cable lets you see whether the cable is wired correctly. NetTool also can show whether a network is using Token Ring or Ethernet, and can also detect a telephone company connection by displaying which pins are carrying tip and ring signals.
Inserting a NetTool between a network device and its hub or switch (it includes two RJ-45 ports) provides a lot of useful information about the device and its network connection. The device also can display the network device's name and IP, IPX and media access control addresses, along with the identity of servers and router gateways the device talks to.
NetTool has only one testing function, labeled autotest. Selecting it gave us a display showing detected problems, recognized protocols, and identified key devices and general network health. On a separate menu screen, NetTool offers a speedometer-style network utilization display and the ability to ping IP addresses.
Fluke's OneTouch Series II
Even more versatile than the NetTool, Fluke's OneTouch Series II Network Assistant is everything a handheld cable and network-testing device should be. Only its high price kept it from the top spot.
The cable-test mode included similar cable tests of the NetTool, but it also lets users enter custom Nominal Velocity of Propagation (NVP) values to test cables other than Category 5/6E. It also has an xDSL option for testing DSL connections.
The OneTouch network diagnostics are comprehensive. The autotest function discovers network devices and displays the result as icon-associated counts. Touching an icon brings up multiple levels of considerable detailed information.
Like the NetTool, OneTouch recognizes protocols to identify devices as IP servers, routers or other devices. Also like the NetTool, OneTouch has two RJ-45 ports, so the unit can be inserted between a network device and its network connection. The OneTouch can ping devices via ICMP packets, trace routes to devices and query devices via SNMP.
Agilent's FrameScope
Agilent's FrameScope initially enters cable-test mode and shows the length of the cable it's connected to, among other tests. It also can let you modify details such as wire pairings for Category 5E and 6, but not NVP values. FrameScope's cable certification tests require the DualRemote 350 option, a $2,000 separate unit connected to the other end of a cable.
Touching the network icon switches the FrameScope to network test mode. In this mode, FrameScope offers a plethora of diagnostic functions. In contrast to NetTool's single autotest function, FrameScope can have multiple autotest suites. Each suite represents a collection of one or more network devices you want to test. Each time a test is run, you can specify which suite to use, the number of times to iterate the test and the number of minutes to pause between iterations. The FrameScope displays network utilization and frame (by unicast, broadcast, multicast and error categories) counts and percentages along with protocol (by IP, IPX and other categories) counts and percentages.
FrameScope's station list shows each device's IP address and DNS name for the stations, servers, routers and remote stations it discovers on the network. Selecting a network device from the list reveals details about that device, such as frame counts and percentages categorized by type of frame - unicast, broadcast, multicast and error.
Fluke's OptiView Network Analyzer
If your company can afford it, Fluke's OptiView Network Analyzer is the ultimate cable-testing and network-diagnostic tool. The OptiView's cable-testing feature had basic tests, including cable length, wiremap information, short circuits and the like. The Ethernet Pro Gigabit model can check 10/100M bit/sec and Gigabit Ethernet nets.
The OptiView's network diagnostics rival those of a full-blown protocol analyzer. It shows multiple port switch statistics on one screen, which lets you compare switch port traffic levels at a glance. The multiport router display is similarly useful. The OptiView graphically reveals network utilization details, device discovery, network discovery, protocol statistics, problem discovery and recognized events. The device also can generate traffic, map topology and capture and decode packets.
Psiber Pinger Network IP Test Tool
Psiber's Pinger Network IP Test Tool is a simple device with a single purpose. It emits ICMP "ping" packets to test IP connectivity to one to eight network devices. The Pinger displays the success or failure of the operation, the round-trip time for the packets and an indication of whether the contents of the received packets match the contents of the transmitted packets or whether the packets were damaged in transit.
Odds and ends
Except for the Pinger, all the units we tested can transfer test results into a PC via a serial link. In each case, getting the transferred data into a spreadsheet or database for further analysis and reporting is completely painless.
The NetTool's documentation consists of a user guide and quick-reference card, while the OneTouch comes with a user guide, "getting started" guide and a quick-reference card. Both sets of documentation were more than adequate.
Because the FrameScope is a relatively new product, its user manual was a preliminary draft and we noted a few glaring errors. For example, the manual said the FrameScope automatically polls your network and discovers devices when you power it on. We found that the unit powered up in cable test mode. The OptiView comes with a user guide and quick-reference "at a glance" card. The user guide is brief and doesn't discuss OptiView's many features with as much depth as we would have liked. The Pinger's documentation is an eight-page card-stock booklet that contains essential information but lacks a professional appearance.
Conclusion
Dropped packets, cable faults, failed network adapters, misconfigured devices and sluggish performance are client session killers. A tool that can reveal cable faults and network health is an essential requirement in any network administrator's first-aid kit. We recommend budget-conscious administrators take a close look at Fluke's NetTool. However, for those with lots of bucks to spend on diagnostic tools, we suggest the OneTouch unit.

INFOLINK - NEW WEB-BASED TECHNOLOGY PROVIDES REAL-TIME LINKS BETWEEN RETAILERS AND SUPPLIERS.
PR Newswire, London, June 13. This press release is transmitted on behalf of Manhattan Associates.
London -
Manhattan Associates, (Nasdaq: MANH), a global provider of technology-based fulfilment solutions, today announced details of InfoLink(TM), a new supply chain initiative that employs web-based technology to link retailers with their suppliers and provide end-to-end inventory visibility. Communication between retailers and their suppliers will be facilitated through XML technology and will allow for information to be transferred directly between suppliers' and retailers' systems. Microsoft is providing expertise in the XML document definition, based on the BizTalk(TM) Framework. The InfoLink initiative will help retailers enhance in-stock positions, reduce inventory and increase gross margins. Suppliers should benefit from improving their customer service capabilities, reducing operational costs and having a comprehensive integration strategy for emerging trading exchanges which are changing the way they do business.
US retailer, Federated Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE: FD) recently completed an InfoLink pilot programme, which enabled the transfer of order and shipment status information between three of the company's suppliers systems and its own in-house system using the Internet. The order status information shared through this solution, using XML, is more detailed than existing EDI transactions. Now that the pilot has been successfully completed, additional functionality is under development that includes features such as alert mechanisms when shipment conditions change, additional order status information and greater inventory visibility.
"Retailers need better shipment status information to improve merchandise flow and customer service," said Pete Longo, President of Federated Logistics and Operations, a division of Federated Department Stores. "Currently that information must be manually chased down from multiple points. This is frequently done over the 'phone and is extremely time consuming and often ineffective. This initiative will foster a collaborative trading community where retailers and suppliers can freely and easily exchange information."
"We believe the use of this technology will be a major step in the development of a comprehensive Internet-based solution that will allow for suppliers to meet external reporting requirements and allow retailers to receive the information directly into their systems," said Manhattan Associates Chairman and Founder Alan Dabbiere. "Manhattan Associates is working closely with Federated Department Stores to fully develop InfoLink as a standardised product that will link suppliers to their extended enterprise and enable collaborative information sharing."
Federated Department Stores, Inc.
Federated Department Stores, Inc., with corporate offices in Cincinnati and New York, is one of the nation's leading department store retailers with annual sales of more than US Dollars 17.3 billion. ADVICE ETC.THE ON-RAMP.(Metropolitan Times)(Advice Etc.The On-Ramp)
THE ORIGINAL HACKERS
I'm not talking about computer hackers, but hack drivers, particularly the New York City breed of cabbie.
You know how everyone thinks New York cab drivers must have hundreds of real-life stories about what goes on in the back seat? Or about the celebrities they pick up? You know how they're all rising actors still in their pre-off-Broadway phase - driving at night, auditioning during the day?
Well, it's mostly urban mythology. Most New York City cabbies are career drivers. It's all they do. But they do have neat stories.
At least one of them, Peter Franklin, is Net savvy and he's here to do his part to perpetuate the myth of the colorful New York City philosopher/hack driver. Mr. Franklin is already known to New Yorkers because of his one-minute cab stories on the all-news station WINS in the Big App.
His page has a cyber cab simulator that lets you experience the thrill of crashing your car (your mouse actually) into a real NYC taxi. The cab crumples at the part you click and his face appears, honoring you with a real NYC taxi driver insult such as "Your mother's so dumb she sits on the TV and watches the couch."
I just wish I had a dollar for every real NYC cabbie I have had to teach how to get to JFK.
Roadmap: The Gabby Cabbie http://gabby.com/index.htm.
The Gabby Cabbie came to my attention from Chris Stamper's Stamper's News Nuggets one of the more interestingly written of the numerous World Wide Web and Internet tip sheets that float around the Net.
Politically, it pulls slightly to right-of-center and will occasionally quote something from Washington's better daily newspaper. I sure can't fault his attitude. Subscribe for free by sending an e-mail to

FIND YOURSELF
Maybe you're a person who is active in several of the science-fiction-oriented discussion news groups on the Internet's Usenet.
It's hard to remember where you posted that piece of deathless prose you wrote cataloging the weaponry of starships belonging to the Federation, the Klingons, Romulans and Ferrengi in "Star Trek" episodes.
Was it in rec.arts.sf.starwars or was it rec.games.netrek? Or did you post it to
rec.arts.startrek.current? You type the keywords "photon torps" into the DejaNews search engine for news groups, and hit the button.
DejaNews sorts through more than 4 gigabytes of news-group postings in a few seconds and spits out your post from the first week of last October, a piece titled "Trek Combat Tactics and Strategy."
It also gives the name of the news group, the message topic and the e-mail address of the author. The listings are hyperlinked so you can click on the title and read the message itself.
In addition, you will see a list of everything that person has posted to any other news group throughout the entire Net.
Are you getting the implications?
Suppose someone wants to know what dark subcultures you inhabit during the wee hours away from your suit-and-tie day job. They type in your name or e-mail address and watch it scroll.
So again the lesson is this: Never put anything on the Internet that you don't want to end up in your personnel file.
If the FBI learns about DejaNews from my column, I demand a finder's fee and immunity for my next six crimes.

RE: ANAGRAMS
I learned something new this week. There are an awful lot of people out there who are very into anagrams.
In the wake of last week's item on the Web's anagram generator, one of the more amusing e-mail notes came from Mike Morton (mike@morton.com), a Hawaii software author who is famous among his ilk for his anagram of the name "Ronald Wilson Reagan." It re-sorts into "No, darlings, no ERA law."
Mr. Morton, who wrote his own shareware anagram generator, Ars Magna ("an anagram for anagrams"), informed me that, sadly, "Washington Times" can be rearranged into "Ha, I'm tossing Newt!"
Say it ain't so.
The much-touted "information superhighway" was re-cast by Mike into "New utopia? Horrifying sham." For himself, "Michael Morton" prefers the anagram pseudonym "Mr. Machine Tool."
Roadmap: For those who missed it last time, an anagram generator is available on the Web at http://csugrad.cs.vt.edu/*eburke/anagrams.html. Substitute a tilde for the asterisk (*). Go ahead, become addicted. I have.
