Fed: National holiday road toll reaches nine

The death of a truck driver in northern New South Wales yesterday has brought the national
holiday road toll to nine.

Police say the truck was travelling along the Bruxner Highway near Casino shortly before
3pm (AEDT) when it left the road and overturned.

Rescue crews worked for several hours to reach the driver who was trapped in the cabin.

Casino police inspector DAVE DRIVER says it appears the truck had failed to negotiate a bend.

He says the truck overturned, crushing the cabin.

Victorian police say a man, 24, lost control of his car and crashed into a power pole
on Rendells Road near Waaia, in central Victoria yesterday.

Six people have died on roads in NSW, there's been one death in South Australia, one
in Queensland and one in Victoria.

(Eds: National road toll figures are for the period 0001 December 22 to 2359 January
7 AEDT. Some states and territories have different periods.)
